i've been writing a lot for the first time in a long time. it feels good. idk how long i'll be able to keep this up for, since this is the week i'm off of work, but i hope i'll at least be able to finish the bloodborne fic i'm working on.

Hello! My name is cloud, and my pronouns are they/them or it/its. My identity is AAAAA (Autistic, ADHD, Agender, Aromantic, Asexual). All of these things are very important to my conception of myself and the world. I'm an adult, and in college studying environmental science and computer science.

My current interests are primarily Revolutionary Girl Utena and Bloodborne, though I'm also into a wide variety of other things. I'm also likely to post about the TTRPG games I'm in or running, as well as my adventures with old hardware and open-source software. Most of what I post will be disorganized meta thoughts, mini-essays, or fanfic.

I view subscriptions as very casual, and I don't view unsubscribing as anything significant. Feel free to subscribe and unsubscribe freely. I'll only grant access to those I know IRL, but most of my posts will be for anyone to view.

I'm very friendly, feel free to strike up a conversation even if we've never interacted!

it feels like for the past couple of weeks i've been constantly having to deal with massively time and energy-consuming things with very little breaks in between, and a full-time job on top of all of that. i'm hoping to be able to relax a bit in the last couple of weeks before i go back to college.

i think i might want to try doing the rgu rewatch i'd been planning (i'm helping a friend make a revamped TW list for the show!) it'll be nice to dive back into the (admittedly intense) character and symbolic content and hopefully find a new perspective i didn't have before. i think this time i might want to focus more on miki and kozue, of the main cast they're the ones i have least figured out. only problem is, my photosensitivity's gotten a good deal worse since my last rewatch, so i might have to skip many of the flashing light sequences. i know the show was made before the porygon episode, and they didn't know how dangerous it was to use that animation technique, but still...

oh, i also want to try to get at least one of the three bloodborne fics i'm currently working on into a publishable state within the week. the easiest would probably be just an entry or two in the loose series about my OC hunter and its relationship with the doll and maria, but the crossover oneshot is, well, a oneshot.

one other thing about last night's PF2e session was that one of the players had to temporarily dip out midway through, which was explained as their character taking a nap. they got back immediately after the fight with the icicle snakes to see the rest of the party lying on the ground taking persistent coid damage.

pathfinder game today went well despite literally everything that could go wrong going wrong (technical problems in the server and BOTH bots, players having to leave or having their mics stop working, etc). however, not much happened character-wise. it was mostly to introduce the concept of manifest zones and give the party the definitely not plot-relevant evil dragonshard. i think for next session i'll want to work with the players to make some NPCs for them to interact with. and now that the introductory stuff is over i can start working with designated arcs/arc villains.

i've only been able to get to ludwig's second phase once so far, but his fight has been way easier than expected? maybe the threaded cane just has a good moveset for it (being able to hit his head with the whip form has been a godsend). i've literally been wearing the second worst chest armor in the game. i'm also trying to find something to do with my bullets because i can't parry him... old hunter bone maybe?

The threaded cane seems to get the least attention out of the three starting weapons in Bloodborne. It makes sense-you have the hunter axe, which is generally considered the best for beginners due to its high knockback giving the player a lot of breathing room; the saw cleaver, which due to a combination of stellar traits (including dealing serrated damage in its base form) is considered one of the best weapons in the game; and... the threaded cane, which has both the weakest damage and knockback of the three. Not hard to see why it's often overlooked.

I want to get one thing out of the way first: in Bloodborne, a weapon's moveset is far more important than its damage, every time, no exceptions. An un-upgraded weapon with a good moveset will pretty much always outperform a +10 weapon with a bad moveset (or a moveset that you don't understand how to use). The way Bloodborne's combat works demands an understanding of your weapon and an ability to be flexible with it in order to have responses prepared for many different situations. It doesn't matter if you're outputting a thousand damage per hit if you can't find a window to deal that damage safely.

When it comes to its moveset, the threaded cane is definitely the least beginner-friendly of the three. This is mainly because it lacks a spammable move that's broadly useful in most contexts, such as the saw cleaver's standard r1 or the hunter axe's transformed r2. The cane's standard moveset has a short range, while its transformed moveset is a bit slower (meaning you'll need to be spaced well to get it off) and has a tendency to glance off walls.

I don't think the cane's moveset is bad. I think it's actually quite good, it just has a much steeper learning curve. But that's subjective. So I'll get into how to actually use the cane later, for now let's go over the objective, mathematical reasons why the threaded cane is good.

Objective reasons why the threaded cane is good )

So finally, we come to what really matters about the threaded cane: its moveset. The basic template for its moveset is a very common one for Bloodborne weapons; the standard moveset is essentially a quick sword, while its transformed moveset is slower and better for crowd control. The big downside is that the transformed mode cannot charge an R2, but that's small compared to what you're getting. Because the thing about the threaded cane's transformed moveset is that it has some of the longest range of any weapon in the game, and  compared to other transformed weapons, it's fast. Not as fast as the normal mode, but I've never had any problem getting an R2 off in the middle of combat.

The transformed moveset is also great for hunter fights, because you can often out-range and stunlock them, and the weapon's low stamina consumption in both modes means you can maintain the stunlock for quite a while.

The whip form has a tendency to glance off walls in tight corridors, but in those situations you often don't need its additional range, because it's rare to be fighting more than one enemy at a time in those situations. And even then, the transforming attack and jumping attack bring the whip straight down, which fixes your wall glancing problem. The jumping attack in general is quite good.

In short, the threaded cane is awesome because it's so versatile, you will rarely come across a situation that it doesn't have the tools to deal with. It takes a while to learn, but it is incredibly worth it.

one of the things i've noticed about the rgu fandom is that people tend to... underestimate utena as a character, and not give her the same depth of analysis they give to other characters. at first this might not make much sense, after all, she's the protagonist! but that's the thing-she's the protagonist, thus the story is told from her point of view, and because she's not an obviously deceitful character, i think this causes the audience to sort of... assume they know everything about her, and to project their own traits and assumptions onto her (in the end all girls really are like the rose bride, i suppose).

this isn't really a bad thing in and of itself, but it can still be kind of frustrating to see other characters be given pages and pages of analysis, while utena is often reduced to a kind dumb jock archetype.

just to counter one mistake i see a lot of people make about her (the idea that she never questioned anything told to her), in episode 2 she did try to ask questions. and anthy either dodged or dismissed them. she doesn't ask anthy much after that. this, to me, looks a whole lot like recognizing the boundary anthy set even though anthy did not explicitly state it, and respecting that boundary. i think much of what makes her seem "dumb" is more her being inexperienced and overly trusting.

(she also, canonically, gets mostly 99s and 100s in math)

and this isn't to say utena is a genius, or acting with thought and care in every situation, but simply to explain why common assumptions about her as a character might not be correct, and why many of her actions warrant a deeper analysis.

Debian 12 released today! Very excited to try it out. One of the lab computers is on Debian 11, will maybe try installing 11 first to see how the upgrade process is. I'll definitely have to monitor the mailing lists for a bit to see how the upgrade is for other people. I've been looking forward to this release for a long time. Might even switch my primary box to it, I love OpenSUSE but man does it annoy me sometimes.

Summary: They're safe and together at last, but Anthy can't quite shake her fears. Fortunately, Utena is there to help keep them at bay.

The first night after they find each other is wonderful and terrifying all at once. Utena wakes up long before rosy-fingered dawn arrives to find Anthy's eyes wide open, staring desperately into her own.

"Have you been awake this whole time?" she asks. Anthy's silence is the only answer she needs.

Utena reaches out with her free hand-they fell asleep with their hands clasped, but nothing more-and cups the side of Anthy's face as gently as if she were cradling a baby bird, which had escaped its shell mere seconds ago.

"What's wrong?" she tries again, her voice as soft as down.

"Utena..." Anthy whispers, as she covers Utena's hand with her own, pressing it into her cheek, "The truth is, I-" she stops, her breath hitching, and her grip on Utena's hand tightens.

Utena says nothing, but she brushes the single tear that had fought its way out of Anthy's eye away with her thumb, and offers a comforting half-smile.

After a moment's pause, Anthy closes her eyes, breathes in deeply. "I'm afraid," she says. She opens her eyes again, and takes in Utena's silent encouragement. "I'm afraid that... that I'm going to wake up and you won't be here anymore. That I dreamed you into existence, and I'm still searching... or worse, that I'm still there, that we never left at all."

"Oh, Anthy... " Utena murmurs, "I-" You'll what? Protect her? From what? "I-" And now it is Anthy's turn to offer support. With her thumb, she strokes Utena's hand gently, patiently. "I'm scared too," Utena admits.

The weight of these truths hangs heavy in the air above them, a suffocating shadow that they contemplate together in silence.

"...How about this," Utena says, and lifts her hand from Anthy's face. Anthy flinches almost imperceptibly when Utena's hand is pulled away from her own, but lets her former champion go. Utena holds her pinky finger out towards Anthy. "Pinky promise that we'll both be here when we wake up?"

Anthy blinks, confusion momentarily overtaking the fear permeating her form. "What?"

"You know, a pinky promise! It's like a normal promise, but you lock pinkies, and that makes it, uh, stronger I guess." Utena glares, disgruntled, as silent laughter blooms across Anthy's eyes. "Don't look at me like that! I wasn't the one who came up with it!"

Anthy closes her eyes for a moment as she shakes with barely-contained giggles. Her mirth is infectious, and soon they're both laughing as quietly as they can, desperately attempting to not wake Chu-Chu, who is snoring like a chainsaw on the bedpost above Utena's head.

At last, they calm down enough to breathe evenly again. Anthy reaches out to take Utena's pinky in her own. "I swear that I will be here when you wake up," she promises.

Utena smiles. "And I swear that I'll be here when you wake up."

"The pact is sealed," Anthy says, her voice suddenly solemn and ominous.

Utena eyes her warily. "...I didn't just commit myself to a cross-timeline ghost pepper-eating competition on the moon, did I?"

Anthy grins sheepishly. "...Not this time," she says. She reaches out to wrap her arm around Utena's waist, then hesitates. "May I?" she asks, her voice nervous and hopeful at once.

"Of course," Utena says, and as Anthy tucks her head in the crook of her neck, she pulls Anthy's body against her own with her free arm. Anthy makes a small noise of contentment, and tightens her own grip with her hand reaching up to Utena's shoulder blade.

They both sleep peacefully after that.
